Meet the Masters: A Spotlight on Tuza and the Founding Members of Salaka Dance Ensemble

In the heart of Ghana, amidst the vibrant rhythms and rich cultural tapestry of West Africa, a musical legacy was born. Meet Tuza Afutu, a remarkable performer, passionate teacher, and the driving force behind the Salaka Ensemble. Tuza’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of Ghanaian music is as inspiring as it is enthralling.

Born into a family where the beat of the drum was a way of life, Tuza’s love affair with music began at a tender age. Growing up in Ghana, where resources were scarce, Tuza’s passion for drumming found expression through ingenuity and determination. “There is no way we had enough money to buy a drum,” Tuza reminisces, recalling how he crafted rhythms from everyday objects like pots, pans, and jerry-cans. This resourcefulness laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the art of percussion.

Fast forward three decades, and Tuza has emerged as a luminary in the world of traditional West African music. As the Creative Director of African Beat, he brings the infectious energy of African drumming and dance to audiences across Australia. Whether captivating school students, engaging aged care residents, or enthralling corporate high fliers, Tuza’s performances are a testament to his passion and skill.

But Tuza’s journey is not one traveled alone. Alongside him stands Alima, a prodigious talent in her own right. Alima’s initiation into the world of traditional music began at the age of 12, setting her on a path that would lead her to the stages of Holland and beyond. As part of the Ghana Junior All-Stars, she showcased her prowess at the World Children’s Festival, blending pop, percussion, traditional dance, and acrobatics with effortless grace.

In 2005, Alima’s journey intersected with Salaka Ensemble, where she assumed the role of lead female dancer. Infusing the ensemble with her electrifying energy and passion for African dance, Alima adds a dynamic dimension to their performances. Together with Tuza and fellow members, she embodies the spirit of Salaka – a celebration of culture, heritage, and the power of rhythm.

As we shine a spotlight on Tuza and the founding members of Salaka Ensemble, we celebrate not just their musical talents, but the resilience, creativity, and spirit that define their journey. From the streets of Ghana to the world stage, their story is a testament to the transformative power of music and the enduring legacy of African heritage.
